Odds & Ends | Things You Probably Didn't Know About Your Coffee

By the way, as I write this it is 10:45 PM on Thursday and it is flurrying in South Alabama. Meaning, I just saw two flurries when I squinted my eyes. By the looks of peoples social media accounts, you would think it is a snow-apocalypse. I miss seeing actually snow. The thick stuff that comes down in sheets and within minutes is up to your ankles. That my friends, is snow. And it is beautiful. And I miss it.

  • It's going to be Legen-wait for it-dary! According to legend, the effects of coffee were first noticed by goat-herders, when they saw their goats going crazy near a bush of red, coffee berries.
  • Let's visit the Bean-Belt! All coffee is grown in the regions between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Hawaii is also the only state in the United States to grow coffee. And it is good.
  • No coffee houses? That's just wrong! In the 1600s, the King of England banned coffee houses. He thought the people meeting there were plotting against him. He just needed a cup to settle his nerves.
  • Berry or Bean? Which is it? Actually, it's both! The coffee bean is located inside a coffee berry, which is actually red. Once harvested, it is then roasted, leaving just the bean. After being put into some hot heat, 500F, they "pop" twice and then will soon be in a cup near you. Unless you just want to eat a handful like the cowboys used to do.
  • Small Cappuccino! Large Latte! Non-fat, Grande! Black Coffee, Please. About 1.6 BILLION (with a "b") cups of coffee are consumed DAILY in the WORLD. Talk about needing a fix. Over 50% of coffee is consumed at breakfast time. And about 35% of coffee consumed in a day is from the United States.
  • Give Me A Boost. According to some studies, coffee may enhance physical performance. The caffeine gives energy, giving athletes a boost of what they need. It might help them perform better at endurance exercises, in high intensity workouts, and may help reduce post-workout muscle pain.
  • I'm quite normal, thank you! In the 1700s, having a coffee addiction was considered a social problem.
  • I'll Take Some 1,3,7 Trimethylxanthine, Please. That big "T" word is the chemical name for caffeine. Say that next time to your barista, I'm sure it will throw them off.
  • Coffee mint, Anyone? Research has shown that coffee may actually inhibit the growth of bacteria that causes halitosis, aka "bad breath."
  • Voted Most Popular...Almost. Coffee is the highest traded commodity in the world. Right behind oil.
