Short Hair Don't Care...Except, I Do Care!

There is really only so much you can do with curly hair. I often get it cut and my friends (or mom) will say, "oh, it looks the same." Unless you get a dramatic cut with curly hair, no matter what you seem to do it constantly looks the same. At least, that is what has been my story. I've had my hair pretty much one way my entire life. Really, really long. The only thing that changed was whether I straightened it that day or not. My hair also ends up in a ponytail at the end of most days as well. When I go to work it has to be in a pony. When I workout, I have to have it off my neck. I can literally count on one hand the number of times I have cut my hair short. Once right before I went to college, then another time during college and I donated 11 inches! And now. As of last Friday afternoon.
I've never been one to freak out over haircuts, I either like it or I don't. And if I don't, I'll just wear it in a pony until it's time to cut it again. Yet, whenever I do cut off significant inches from my head, it always takes me a minute. No, I have never cried. I just sit there staring in the mirror, running my hands over it, channeling my inner Rapunzel. Hoping that if I start singing, it's magic powers would work wonders and put all the hair on the floor back on my head!
This is how I was last Friday. As I swung around to look in the mirror and my hairdresser asked me, "Don't tell me we went too short?" I replied, "No. I've had it this short before. It just takes me a minute." Did I say I liked it? Nope. Did I say I hated it? Nope. I just sat there wondering why I let her keep cutting.

Pros & Cons of Having Long Hair
Pros
  • It is beautiful!
  • I feel like a princess.
  • Keeps me warm in the winter.
  • I really like it!
  • I can channel my inner Lorde.
  • I love a long pony-tail.
  • It's thick.
Cons
  • It takes a lot of shampoo and conditioner to wash it.
  • In the morning it can look like a lion's mane.
  • At night, I feel like it could strangle me to death.
  • In the summer it is SUPER hot.
  • Can't work, workout, clean, or bend without it attacking me, unless in a pony.
  • My curls get weighed down a lot.
  • It's thick.

Pros & Cons of Having Short Hair
Pros
  • It's cute!
  • Keeps me cool in the summer.
  • Don't have to use excess shampoo or conditioner.
  • It's quick to fix.
  • Still can pull it back in a short pony.
  • Off my neck and doesn't attack me as much.
  • Curls WAY better!
Cons
  • It isn't my long hair.
  • Can't have long braids or long pony.
  • It makes me look even more like a 13 year old.

That last con is a whammy! So, although I couldn't think of a lot of cons for having the shorter hair, there are pros and cons to both. Like there is with anything. There might be some days where I will hate it and wish desperately that my long hair would instantaneously come back. But, there will also be days where I absolutely love it and want to keep it short forever. That will probably not happen though. I'll just keep with my cycle of growing it out super, super long and then cutting it short once every three years. For now, I'm going to try and forget about the fact that it makes me look even younger (because I certainly didn't need help in that area!) and enjoy it. A little change never hurt anyone. And after all, it is just hair and it will grow back. :)

I think short hair makes me more sassy.

Tips & Tricks for Curly Hair
I am by no means a hair dresser or expert, these are just things that work well for me.
  • I do not brush my hair! It just leads to more frizz. I really can't think of the last time I used a brush. I do however comb it with a wide-tooth comb while in the shower.
  • Sometimes I fully rinse out my conditioner and then sometimes I don't. I also mostly put conditioner on my ends.
  • Speaking of conditioner. I use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. It's the L'Oreal EverCurl system.
  • I really only put mousse in my hair. I recently switched to this alcohol-free, Captivating Curls Cream Mousse by Suave.
  • I put the mousse in when my hair is still pretty wet and sometimes run a wide-tooth comb through it again.
  • I let my air dry most of the time, but when I really want to style it, I use a diffuser.
